Topic Cluster

A topic cluster is a content architecture where one comprehensive pillar page links to multiple supporting articles, all covering different aspects of a central subject.

A topic cluster is the modern answer to the question of how to build topical authority in search. Instead of publishing isolated articles about random keywords, a topic cluster groups related content around one central theme — with a pillar page at the center and supporting cluster pages linking back to it.

The pillar page covers the broad topic at a high level — for example, "Content Marketing for SaaS Companies." Each cluster page goes deep on a specific subtopic, like "How to Build a B2B Content Calendar" or "SaaS Content Distribution Strategies." Every cluster page links back to the pillar, and the pillar links out to each cluster.

This architecture serves two purposes. First, it signals to search engines that your site has comprehensive, expert-level coverage of a topic — which helps the entire cluster rank higher over time. Second, it maps naturally to the buyer journey, with cluster pages capturing top-of-funnel searches and the pillar page serving buyers doing broader research.

For B2B companies, topic clusters are especially powerful because B2B buyers do extensive research before making decisions. A well-built cluster keeps them on your site through multiple stages of that research — increasing both time on site and the likelihood they contact you.

Why It Matters

Builds topical authority faster than publishing isolated articles — search engines reward comprehensive coverage of a subject

Maps to the full buyer journey, capturing prospects at every stage of their research process

Internal linking within a cluster passes authority between pages, lifting rankings across the entire group simultaneously
