Google announced at I/O 2026 that AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly users, with query volume more than doubling every quarter since the platform launched in July 2025. Google also confirmed the convergence of AI Mode and AI Overviews into a single AI Search experience. A benchmark study analysing 45 million search queries across 828 enterprise B2B companies, published alongside the I/O announcements, found that AI Overviews now appear in half of all search results where these brands rank. The median brand is cited inside just 3 percent of those AI Overviews. Organic rankings and AI citations are operating on separate logic — and most B2B content programs were built for rankings alone.

Google I/O 2026

Query volume on AI Mode has more than doubled every quarter since July 2025. B2B Tech queries now trigger AI Overviews in 82 percent of cases, up from 36 percent one year ago. As part of the I/O 2026 announcements, Google confirmed that AI Mode and AI Overviews are merging into a unified AI Search product, removing the distinction between the two surfaces for both users and publishers.

3%

Share of relevant AI Overviews where the median enterprise B2B brand is cited

Benchmark study of 45M queries across 828 enterprise B2B companies, 2026

The benchmark study found that only 17 percent of sources cited inside AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10 for the same query. That means five out of six AIO citations go to content that does not appear on the first page of traditional search results. The optimisation logic for AI citation is structurally different from the logic for ranking — keyword density, backlink volume, and domain authority influence rankings but are weaker predictors of AI citation frequency. Structured direct answers, attributed statistics, and self-contained section formatting are stronger citation signals.

+35%

More organic clicks received by sources cited inside AI Overviews vs uncited sources

2026 AI Overviews performance analysis

Sources cited inside AI Overviews receive 35 percent more organic clicks than uncited sources competing for the same query. Paid click rates for cited sources are 91 percent higher than for uncited sources on the same page. The citation advantage compounds the organic ranking advantage rather than replacing it — brands that earn both a top ranking and an AIO citation on the same query see the largest traffic uplift.

The convergence of AI Mode and AI Overviews into a single surface increases the urgency of closing the citation gap. As the two products merge, the proportion of queries returning AI-generated answers will grow further. Enterprise B2B brands that address citation optimisation now face less competition than they will in 12 months, as the practice becomes more widely understood and adopted.

Why Being Cited in ChatGPT Matters More Than Ranking Number One on Google

For a growing share of high-intent B2B queries, the buyer never reaches page one of Google. They ask ChatGPT or Perplexity and act on the answer. Being cited in that answer is now worth more than the top organic result for those queries.
